TOPICS COVERED IN THIS ISSUE

IRS HOLDING MILLIONS OF DOLLARS
The Internal Revenue Service has $62+ million in refund checks that have been returned by the US Postal Service due to incorrect names or addresses, or because taxpayers moved and did not leave a forwarding address. If you were due a refund, but have not yet received it, call IRS at 1-800-829-10403.

If you moved since filing your last tax return, you should file a Form 8822, Change of Address, with the local office of the IRS serving your old address.

For 1997, consider having your refund directly deposited into your bank account. To do that, you just have to complete two extra lines on your Form 1040. For a quicker refund, have us file your return electronically with your refund being directly deposited into your bank account. For a small fee, our office can take care of electronic filing most US and Massachusetts income tax returns. We are an "Authorized IRS e-file Provider." Call us!

INSURANCE REVIEW TIME?????
When was the last time you reviewed your liability and catastrophic insurance coverages? You know you should review both coverages and premiums at least every three years. This risk and its related cost is usually the least item looked at by a businessperson. Since you have not looked at it in a while, now is the time to call in your insurance agent to review coverages and to quote the renewal or change of existing coverages. It would also be wise to ask two other insurance agents to review coverages and offer a quote. You may be very pleasantly surprised to see what is wrong with your existing coverage. Be sure to tell your current insurance agent that you will be soliciting two other quotes so he/she knows where he/she stand.

Many accountants view their goal as minimizing their clients' taxes. NOT ME! I like to see my clients pay more taxes - because their earnings and profits are increasing dramatically. I can make a major difference in achieving those profits. Talk to me and find out more.
1998 PLANNING
Beginning in 1998, the 10% penalty tax on "early" withdrawals from an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) will be waived if the amounts are used to pay qualified higher education expenses or expenses incurred by qualified first-time home buyers (up to the first $10,000).

Paying winter or spring tuition in January 1998 starts the HOPE, or lifetime learning credit. The $1,500 HOPE credit applies to expenses paid after 1997 for an academic period beginning after 1997. The credit is, of course, subject to the Adjusted Gross Income phase-out levels.

Taxpayers who have qualifying children under age 17 may be entitled to a new child tax credit of $400. Yes, of course, again there are AGI phase-out levels.

These credits can be yours all year long, by adjusting your withholding exemptions. If you qualify for the credit, file a new W-4 Exemption Certificate, and enter dependency exemptions equivalent to the amount of the annual credit(s). This way, you can receive benefit of the credits all year long. Call your Human Resources or Payroll Department and ask.

CAFETERIA PLAN
A cafeteria plan allows an employee to choose between cash and certain nontaxable qualified benefits that are not included in income. These benefits include coverage under an employer provided accident or health plan, group-term life insurance, elective contributions under a qualified cash or deferred arrangement, dependent care assistance, and adoption assistance. INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR
Individuals who contract with a business to sell insurance and financial products qualified as independent contractors, not employees. Not only did the workers enter in written contracts that designated them as independent contractors, receive no employee-type benefits, they also paid their own operating expenses. Moreover, no employment taxes were withheld from their earnings, which were reported on Form 1099. Although the workers received some training and instructions, the businesses did not possess the day-to-day control necessary to overcome the independent manner in which the workers operated.

No one is required to pay more in taxes than the law demands. If you pay too much, you have less resources to meet your other financial goals. We can help find tax deductions and credits, and help you plan so your taxes will be as low as possible, year after year. And we can also assist you with business and estate tax planning.

SCORE ONE FOR BILL
An attorney was being interviewed in regard to the Department of Justice's recent injunction against Microsoft. One of her observations... "This ruling is good for the consumer. It will promote competition and competition will lower the cost of the product."

Hmmmmm, the cost of Microsoft's Internet Explorer is $0.00. does this mean that Netscape is going to pay people to use its browser? I guess Netscape will make it up on volume.

BEWARE OF CREDIT REPAIR SCAMS
Wouldn't you like to have all the bad or negative information about you erased from your credit history reports? Many Americans have paid hundreds of dollars to "credit repair" companies who promise to do just that.

Unfortunately, they may not be getting enough for their money. You can challenge negative and inaccurate information yourself at no cost, usually be filling out a dispute form supplied by a credit bureau. negative and accurate information generally will remain for as long as seven years.

Under the law, a "credit repair" company must tell you bout your legal rights in a written contract. The contract must also spell out the services to be provided, the total cost and the guarantees. The contract must also explain that you have three days to cancel at no charge.

Thanks for this tip from Kegan, Werlin & Pabian, LLP, attorneys of Boston.

DOUGHBOY DIES
Veteran Pillsbury spokesman Pop N. Fresh died yesterday of a severe yeast infection.

He was 71. Fresh was buried in one of the largest funeral ceremonies in recent years.

Dozens of celebrities turned out including Mrs. Butterworth, the California Raisins, Hungry Jack, Betty Crocker, and the Hostess Twinkies. The graveside was piled high with flours as longtime friend Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy, describing Fresh as a man who "never knew how much he was kneaded."

Fresh rose quickly in show business, but his later life was filled with many turn overs. He was not considered a very smart cookie, wasting much of his dough on half-baked schemes.

Still, even as a crusty old man, he was a roll model for millions. Fresh is survived by his second wife. They have two children and one in the oven.

The funeral will be tomorrow at 4:50 for about 20 minutes.
